Activity

Public interest in stem cell research is running high. A team of scientists at your local university has just been given a very large grant to carry out some work on ways of instructing both embryonic and adult stem cells to turn into exactly the tissue needed by a patient.

In your role as a reporter on your local radio station, you have been told to put together a five minute slot explaining to listeners what stem cell research is all about and why this particular research grant is so important. Plan out what you are going to say and make a recording of it to play to your fellow students.

You MUST make a recording, not deliver your talk in person – a live performance isn’t the same because on radio people can only hear you – they can’t see images or pick up hand gestures to help them understand what you are talking about. You can work in a group and include 'interviews' or reports from different people if you wish.

Hint
  • Your audience will be very mixed in age and scientific knowledge – try to make sure that you get the basic facts across to as many people as possible while interesting everyone.
