Imagine the situation …
Plans are approved for a new laboratory to be built a mile away
from your school. The laboratory will be concerned with research
into biomedical cloning. There is a flood of gossip and rumours
are flying around the school – the lab will be a
new Jurassic Park; the lab is part of a takeover bid by
the Raelians and will be a centre for human cloning; scientists
will be looking for local people to clone …
Some of the younger pupils are getting frightened and many parents
have expressed their concerns.
|
Your job is to plan a presentation
to be used in school assemblies and at a meeting
after school for parents to explain why all these
fears are groundless.
| Hints |
- Your presentation should
explain clearly and carefully exactly
what is meant by biomedical cloning.
- You will need to explain
how biomedical cloning relates to other
types of cloning and why there is no need
to worry about cloned dinosaurs or human
clones rampaging around the area!
- Make sure that you use
language which will be accessible to the
pupils and their parents.
- Don't shy away from the
fact that some people may have ethical
concerns about cloning. Explain that this
type of work is carefully regulated -
see the Human
Fertility and Embryology Authority website.
- Ensure that you explain
the science accurately enough so that
pupils and parents can understand what
is being done, why it is being done and
the potential benefits which may result.
