Energy

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be stored or dissipated. It can also change form and can be transferred. This is the first law of thermodynamics.

We use the transfer of electrical energy to power appliances and electrical items, and this often comes from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Types of energy:

  1. Chemical: stored in food and fuel. These stores can go through chemical reactions to transfer the energy.
  2. Thermal: A warm object will store thermal energy.
  3. Gravitational potential: Energy stored due to the position of an object in a gravitational field. If an object is raised, this will store more gravitational potential energy.
  4. Kinetic: Energy related to movements. If an object is faster, this stores more kinetic energy.
  5. Elastic potential: Energy related to stretching and compressing items such as springs.
  6. Electrical: involved with the flow of currents.
  7. Light: energy related to light, such as the sun or light bulbs.
  8. Sound: energy related to sound.
  9. Nuclear: Energy that is released from nuclear reactions.
